How much greenhouse gas is emitted in the world?

GHG emissions from human activities (excluding LULUCF) represent the equivalent of 53 billion tonnes of CO₂ in 2023, up 1.9% compared to 2022. Fossil CO₂ accounts for two-thirds of these emissions. Global emissions rose by 62% between 1990 and 2023, with contrasting developments depending on the country. China accounts for 30% of emissions, the United States 11% and the European Union 6%.
