Part 3
How much greenhouse gas is emitted in Europe?
In 2023, 3.1 Gt CO2 eq of GHGs were emitted in the European Union (excluding LULUCF), down 36% compared to 1990. For the first time, transport replaced the energy industry as the leading emitting sector.
Since the 1990s, emissions have fallen in all sectors except transport. Due to the weight of certain countries and contrasting economic trends, the contribution to this decline is unevenly distributed between member countries.
