En 2016, la France a importé 3,7 millions de tonnes et exporté 1,3 million de tonnes de déchets soumis à une procédure de notification préalable par la Convention de Bâle. L'objectif de celle-ci est de protéger la santé humaine et l'environnement contre les effets nocifs causés par les transferts transfrontières de ces déchets. Que ce soit au niveau français ou européen, ces mouvements transfrontières ont connu une croissance très importante depuis 15 ans. Toutefois, conformément au principe de proximité, les importations et exportations françaises impliquent rarement des pays situés en dehors des frontières européennes et plus de 85 % sont motivées par une valorisation.

In 2016, France imported 3.7 million tonnes and exported 1.3 million tonnes of waste subject to a prior notification procedure under the Basel Convention. Its purpose is to protect human health and the environment from harmful effects caused by the transboundary shipments of such waste. At both a French and European level, there has been a significant increase in cross-border shipments over the last 15 years. However, in accordance with the proximity principle, French imports and exports rarely involve countries outside European borders and more than 85% of them are for recovery purposes.
