Biodiversity issues in mainland France cross-analysed
In the spring of 2019, in a historic report, the IPBES alerted to the global decline of nature at a rate unprecedented in human history: the health of ecosystems is deteriorating faster than ever; the rate of species extinction is accelerating; the reduction or degradation of natural environments due to certain kinds of soil use constitutes the first of the five main factors in biodiversity loss. Mainland France is no exception to this trend. In this context, is it possible to identify in which sectors of the territory the strongest biodiversity issues are concentrated? Are they located where the land uses are likely to make the species and ecosystems fragile? To what extent does the network of protected areas overlap these areas that are potentially under pressure?
These are the main questions that this publication seeks to answer. By mobilising a recent concept, “irreplaceability”, and by intersecting it with pressure and response data, this original spatial analysis aims to highlight awareness areas with regard to national biodiversity issues.
